Pursuit: Legal Design Principles of Government-Supported Adaptation: Designing Effective Decentralization Programs in Cities and Vital Water Social-Ecological Systems

Legal Design Principles of Government-Supported Adaptation: Designing Effective Decentralization Programs in Cities and Vital Water Social-Ecological Systems

This Pursuit convenes a team of legal scholars, social and environmental scientists, government officials, and NGOs to examine when, why, and how government-supported adaptation succeeds or fails.

Graduate Pursuit: Power of the pen: constructing social-ecological narratives of coral reefs in news media and links to policy action

Power of the pen: constructing social-ecological narratives of coral reefs in news media and links to policy action

We propose integrating three case studies from around the world into a conservation culturomics approach. We will synthesize long-term reef monitoring data, a corpus of thousands of local and global media articles, and policy and management actions into a single analytical framework to assess direct and indirect linkages that may influence conservation efforts in unexpected ways.

Pursuit: Soil as a social ecological feedback: Mapping the social and ecological processes for agroecosystem resilience in the era of climate change

"Soil as a social ecological feedback: Mapping the social and ecological processes for agroecosystem resilience in the era of climate change"

Social science research indicates that soil health can act as a “social-ecological feedback” which is a result of direct producer experiences managing for weather variability and extremes and their impact to their soil resources.

Workshop: Advancing interdisciplinary research on social-ecological networks to understand ecosystem services across scales

Advancing interdisciplinary research on social-ecological networks to understand ecosystem services across scales

The benefits people receive from nature (ecosystem services) depend on interactions between people and the natural environment. However, pressures, such as climate change, land-use change, invasive species, and increased demand for food commodities, all present challenges for sustaining these ecosystem services.

Graduate Pursuit: From Storms to Plowshares: A Multi-Scale Spatial Risk Analysis of Hurricane Maria’s Impacts on Puerto Rico’s Agro-Food System

From Storms to Plowshares: A Multi-Scale Spatial Risk Analysis of Hurricane Maria’s Impacts on Puerto Rico’s Agro-Food System

In September 2017, Hurricane Maria caused catastrophic damage to many aspects of life and landscape in Puerto Rico. A year after the hurricane made landfall the island continues its struggle toward recovery, yet in the future extreme events like Hurricane Maria are projected to increase in frequency and severity due to climate change.

Pursuit: A forecast of the timing, locations, sequence and likeliest destinations of populations displaced by sea level rise and coastal extremes

A forecast of the timing, locations, sequence and likeliest destinations of populations displaced by sea level rise and coastal extremes

Over the coming centuries, the climate hazards with greatest potential to drive permanent human migration are the short- and long-term interaction of coastal extreme flooding and sea-level rise (SLR).  Recognizing that large, sudden migrations can be destabilizing (e.g.

Graduate Pursuit: The globalization of conservation: How public perceptions of biodiversity and international trade patterns shape mangrove conservation

"The globalization of conservation: How public perceptions of biodiversity and international trade patterns shape mangrove conservation"

Although conservation is implemented locally, the forces that shape conservation policy and decision-making are increasingly global. Simultaneously promoting human prosperity while protecting biodiversity requires an understanding of how interactions between global and local forces shape conservation management.
