The National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC), located in Annapolis, MD, seeks a Research Assistant to join the Center’s data science team and provide support for communications efforts at the Center. The successful candidate will have experience in using R or similar scripting/statistical language for data management and analysis, be self-motivated, and have a strong interest in socio-environmental issues. The candidate will have a desire to learn and apply new tools in the service of interdisciplinary science teams who seek to answer pressing problems at the intersection of humans and the environment by synthesizing existing data, methods, and theories in novel ways. Job duties include:

  • Provide support for reproducible data management, analysis, and visualization by developing custom scripts to assist resident fellows and science teams;
  • Assist and instruct during computational short courses with an emphasis on use of R as a primary tool;
  • Assist resident fellows and teams in designing and building interactive web visualizations of data using R shiny;
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of websites
  • Summarize research findings and opportunities for web-based distribution
  • Assist with the dissemination of research opportunities via web platforms and social media
  • Maintain catalogs of research publications and computational support provided to SESYNC projects;
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s in a science-related field (natural, social, or computer science);
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and written communications;
  • Demonstrated experience with statistical software (e.g., Stata, SAS) or programming language (e.g., R, python)
  • Minimum 1-year full-time experience in a professional setting
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and track multiple assignments with competing deadlines;
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative in identifying and solving research-related problems

Preferences:

  • Demonstrated experience with web and social media technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new computational/statistical tools
  • Experience working as part of a team of professionals
  • Proficiency in R, especially R shiny;
  • Proficiency with SQL or GIS
