Conceptualizing a Geospatial Software Institute (GSI)

Workshop 2: Geospatial Use Cases and Core Technical Capabilities

Dates: July 15-17, 2018

Location: Chicago, IL, USA

A national Geospatial Software Institute (GSI) has the potential to create bridges across many geospatial domains by establishing a long-term hub of excellence in geospatial software infrastructure that can serve diverse research and education communities. Input from pertinent communities of geospatial software users and developers is critical to conceptualizing such an institute. The GSI steering committee, of which SESYNC is a member, seeks input on (1) which scientific problems could be transformed with better geospatial software; (2) which core technical capabilities are necessary for accelerating scientific geospatial problem solving at scale; and, (3) how an institute could facilitate development and dissemination of these capabilities.

To this end, the second of three community workshops aims to engage both scientists and technologists in articulating needs and capacities on these topics. Many socio-environmental problems could be relevant to this workshop, so we encourage you to consider submitting a position paper in response to the recently released call for papers.
