Abstract
During her talk, Milagros will introduce and elaborate on her research topic, research approach, and main findings. This research documents, as well as questions, how the presence of large mining operations in the Andean regions of Peru alters social and natural landscapes. Taking conflicts over water as a useful entry point for the analysis, it explores and unravels the dilemmas and challenges faced by the main conflicting actors: farmer communities and mining companies. Through an in-depth analysis of how both actors navigate these challenges, focusing on those related to water, the research sets out to understand what happens with water in contexts of mineral extraction. It traces changes in how water is accessed, controlled, and governed, and by whom. By recognizing the complex character of water politics in mining contexts, the research sheds light on how mining reconfigures water management arrangements and also contributes to wider debates about development and governance in contexts characterized by huge power differences.

Using a political ecology approach, her PhD research touched upon governance questions, water conflicts, and mining impacts in Peru. She has a bachelor's degree in Biology-Ecology from the National Agrarian University La Molina in Peru and a master's degree in International Land & Water Management and a PhD in Water Governance from Wageningen University in the Netherlands. She has been actively working in interdisciplinary research teams with grassroots organizations, NGOs, and private and public organizations. She has conducted research and teaching activities in Peru, Ecuador, the Philippines, India, UK, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands. Currently, Milagros is a research fellow at the Water Resources Management Group at Wageningen University and works as project manager for Latin America at the Netherlands Water Partnership to stimulate collaboration between Dutch water organizations and partners in Latin America.
